Homeowners Goal
The clients wanted a pool that could be quickly integrated into their unusual backyard layout without taking up the outdoor space. They wanted a modern family pool that would utilise the space available, but also preserve usable lawn, gathering areas and an open backyard vibe.
Perhaps the strange shape of the backyard made a normal rectangular pool inappropriate for the location. The goal was to build a bespoke pool design that followed the backyard layout more naturally, while yet preserving a premium and well-balanced outdoor space. They also wanted the finished pool area to seem modern, low maintenance and perfect for relaxing and entertaining with family and guests.
The Challenge
One of the main problems of this project was to build a pool that could function inside the odd layout of the backyard of the house. The shape of the backyard didn’t match itself to a regular, rectangular pool design without sacrificing too much practical outdoor space or feeling crowded.
The clients also wanted to keep some elements of the backyard including the lawn area, landscaping and open party space. The design of the pool, therefore, has to flow more organically with the existing backyard flow. The pool needed to be well designed so it could merge into the existing retaining walls, fencing and paving yet still have a clean and contemporary finished aspect.
Our Solution
- We built a unique concrete L-shaped pool to fit the difficult backyard layout, which was able to follow the natural flow of the outdoor space more effectively. The shape of the pool was planned to best utilise the available space rather than trying to squeeze a traditional rectangular pool into the area, creating an open and well balanced backyard arrangement.
- The curving transition of the pool we design helped soften the overall appearance and made a more natural connection between the entertaining spaces, lawn space and surrounding vegetation. This made the clients a functioning swimming area, yet still allowed the remainder of the backyard to be used.
- We also added frameless glass fencing, large-format paving and landscaping surrounds to make the entire outdoor area feel more modern, spacious and visually connected.
Installation Process
1. Pool Design & Site Planning
We began by evaluating the backyard design, landscaping, retaining walls, and space. The irregular layout of the backyard meant the pool design had to be tailored to fit with the natural contours of the outdoor area, while still allowing for usable lawn and gathering space.
2. Excavation and Structural Prep
When the design was approved work began on excavation and site preparation. The crew meticulously set out the pool space and structural footings to support the custom L-shaped concrete pool design and surrounding retaining elements.
3. Pool & Surround Installation
The concrete pool shell was created with the inside finishing, paving, coping and frameless glass fencing completed thereafter. Large-format stone paving was used around the pool area to create a clean, modern outdoor entertaining area.
4. Final Touches & Delivery
After construction was completed, final landscaping and the testing of the pool system and finishing elements were done. The finished project provided a useful and aesthetically pleasing balanced backyard area that fit nicely with the unique layout of the property.
Final Result / Outcome
Smart Use of an Irregular Backyard
The completed transformation has turned the once ugly backyard into a sleek and very functional outdoor living space. The bespoke L-shaped pool design enabled the clients to utilise the space available, while retaining open lawn areas, landscaping and pleasant entertaining zones.
Pool Design Suited to the Layout
The irregular property layout was no match for the frameless glass fencing, wide format paving and crisp pool lines which helped give a more expansive and premium sense to the backyard. By building the pool to the natural shape of the backyard, the end result feels balanced, integrated and visually related to the rest of the outdoor area.
Modern Pool Living for the Family
The homeowners now enjoy a modern family-friendly pool that suits their lifestyle and everyday needs. The finished project not only improved how the backyard functions but also enhanced the overall appearance and value of the property.
Client Review
To be honest, we didn’t believe a pool would work in our backyard with the weird layout, but the end result was better than we imagined. The unique pool design perfectly suits the space and still offers plenty of room for outdoor parties and lounging. The whole room now feels modern, open and a lot more functional for our family. Everything came together and we’re quite thrilled.
