Homeowners Goal
The homeowners wanted to turn their boring and under-utilised backyard into a modern outdoor living room where the family can relax, entertain and spend more time together. The property had a good sized backyard, but much of it was just grass that wasn't used and wasn't really useful or pretty.
They wanted a modern swimming pool that would enhance the connection between the house and the outdoor area, while maintaining the backyard feeling open and uncluttered. They wanted a simple, low maintenance style that felt premium without being overly complicated. The homeowners were looking for a backyard that was a little more lifestyle-oriented and fun for day-to-day family use and entertaining. They wanted a contemporary and inviting vibe that was more in keeping with their remodeled home.
The Challenge
The biggest challenge with this project was taking a large, seemingly empty backyard and making it feel functional, modern and inviting, while still maintaining the open atmosphere of the property. The backyard had room for a pool but the design lacked structure and did not give the residents a great outdoor living experience. Clients wanted more than a swimming pool. They wanted the backyard to seem like an extension of the house and to be a true entertaining space for family and friends. The objective was to develop a design that would improve use and aesthetics, while yet providing adequate open space surrounding the pool area.
Another key thing to consider was to not have a cluttered layout. Careful planning was required to ensure that the paving, fencing and outdoor areas around the pool, which would be the highlight of the backyard, nevertheless felt open and balanced. The project also called for a clean, modern design approach that would complement the style of the refurbished property. The homeowners were after a luxury product, but they also wanted a minimal maintenance outside space that would still be convenient for everyday family use.
Our Solution
- Because of client's backyard condition, we designed a full inground concrete pool with a clean rectangular design that worked with the contour and flow of the backyard and helped create a more modern outdoor entertaining place. The general plan was to improve practicality, but also to retain the open and large sense of the house.
- We positioned the pool adjacent to the house to create a more intimate relationship between the inside and outdoor living areas. This contributed to a more fun overall arrangement and helped to tie the backyard into the rest of the property.
- We used minimalist finishes like light stone pavement and frameless glass pool fencing to keep it looking clean and uncluttered. These finishes kept the sightlines over the backyard open, while providing the outdoor area with a more premium and contemporary feel.
- We planned the surrounding pool area carefully to maximise the usable outdoor space without overpowering the backyard layout. The emphasis was on building a basic, well balanced and low maintenance outside living space for regular family use rather than over landscaping the landscape.
Installation Process
1. Site Preparation and Excavation
We started prepping the backyard and digging out the pool area, following the approved design plan. The site was designed so that the new pool would blend in with the existing home and outdoor space and so that good access would be maintained throughout the build.
2. Building a Concrete Pool
The concrete pool shell, with the requisite structural reinforcement, plumbing and filtration systems, was then built when the excavation was completed. The rectangular pool design was deliberately positioned to enhance usable entertaining space around the backyard.
3. Paving and Glass Fence Installation
Once we had completed the main pool building we added the stone paving around and the frameless glass pool barrier. The finishes gave the outside space a clean, modern look while yet maintaining the backyard open and large.
4. Final Polish & Handover
The final stage was completion of the finishing touches, testing the pool equipment and a comprehensive clean-up of the site. When it was all complete, the client were left with a modern backyard that was family-friendly and suitable for entertaining and everyday usage.
Final Result / Outcome
Modern Family-Friendly Backyard
The end result transformed the backyard from a boring and underutilised lawn area into a modern outdoor living space designed for relaxing, entertaining, and family use. The new concrete swimming pool became the focal point of the backyard while still maintaining a clean and open overall layout throughout the property.
Clean & Open Outdoor Layout
The frameless glass fencing and the light stone pavement further added to the premium and contemporary look without making the room feel crowded. Keeping the design modest and balanced has made the garden much more usable, visually appealing and connected to the home.
Low-Maintenance Outdoor Living
The homeowners now enjoy an outdoor space that is low maintenance and family friendly for both everyday living and entertainment. The end result also dramatically improved the overall presentation and lifestyle appeal of the house.
Client Review
We wanted a backyard that was more modern and functional for our family, and the end result was beyond our expectations. The pool area is clean, airy and truly matches our home. Now the entire space feels so much more inviting and fun to relax in and entertain guests.
